As one of the sports outstanding international officials, Neville May, of Australia, served as Chief Judge of the World Championships in 1977 in Milan, twice as Assistant Chief Judge, and once each as Assistant Homologator and Appointed Judge. But he is likely to be best remembered as an official for his service as Chief Judge of the Moomba Masters for each of the thirty four years from 1964 to the present. This uninterrupted service as Chief Judge of a major international competition is almost surely unequaled in the sport.
As one of the most highly respected members of the Asian Australasian Region, he has also served eight times as Chief Judge of the Group 111 Championships.
Neville was induction into the IWWF Hall of Fame in 1997 and the AWWF Hall of Fame in 2011.
Our thoughts with his wife Joyce, children Helen, Peter, Tony, Jodie and families.
He will be sadly missed.

05Jun12 IWWF invited to take part in China's first International Sports Resources Marketing and Service Trade Fair in Beijing
Des Burke-Kennedy presenting details of World Cup
By the year 2015, China has set a target of generating $600 billion of Service Trade. During the inaugural Fair last week in Beijing, a total of 458 contracts were signed worth an estimated $60 billion. The Fair comprised an enormous exhibition and top level auditorium presentations. The IWWF was represented by IWWF President Kuno Ritschard, IWWF Vice President Thomas Lin and Des Burke-Kennedy, Media & Marketing Chairman. Thanks to the help of the State Water Sports Development Company, an information booth was provided where details of the World Cup and WAKEBOARD 2020 VISION opportunities were displayed for the thousands of visitors.
Des Burke-Kennedy made a presentation in the auditorium on how to use events such as the World Cup series to promote the interests of the hosts and sponsors on both the home and overseas markets. While thousands took part in the various exhibitions and presentations, only three guests were selected for a private face-to-face discussion with Mr. Liu Qi, President of the Beijing Olympic Games Committee and Member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. These were Kuno Ritschard, Des Burke-Kennedy and the World President of the International Advertising Association. As one of the most influential decision-makes in China, Kuno Ritschard presented Mr Liu Qi with copies of the World Cup promotional brochure and the new WAKEBOARD 2020 VISION brochure and DVD. He also stressed the importance of developing Cable Wakeboard and Waterski sites in China. Further announcements are expected shortly in Beijing on these developments. With the well publicised growth in current levels of disposable income in China, this IWWF marketing exercise was designed to maximise awareness of what our sport has to offer in the very competitive field of sports.

09May12 The IWWF Tournament Council has approved a tie of the slalom World record by Whitney McClintock CAN
Whitney skied email@example.com on April 8 at the Isles Tricky Swerve tournament at Isles of Lake Hancock lake 2 in Winter Garden, Florida to tie the existing record held by Regina Jaquess USA.
I first met Alain after the World Championships in 1991. With the election of
Bilo Oliveras and Bruno Tavecchio to World President and Secretary General
it became necessary for the EAME Region, Group II in those days, to elect a
team to take over from them at the 1992 Congress in Dublin.
Talking, Alain and I hit it off straight away, finding that we thought alike,
and we agreed to stand as the EAME team and were elected. Our partnership
as President and Secretary General lasted over 8 years until Alain had health
problems and retired.
Alain was also an International First Class Tournament Judge and took that
work, as well as the position of Secretary General, very seriously. We did not
always agree but were well able to discuss matters and once we had reached
a decision, whether he had been in favour or not, he supported that decision
Alain was a hard man and a hard worker and we had many late night phone
calls. He had a good sense of humour and fun and that stood us in good stead.
He was a true EAME man, particularly at IWSF meeting. On more than one
occasion when seeing me agitated he quietly leaned over and told me to cool
down and stay silent. Alain too could be excitable so it was not one sided!
We had fallen out of touch since his retirement but hearing of his passing now
has made me think of the time when ?Les Quatre AS?, we and our wives all
had the initials AS, enjoyed a good meal and a glass or two of wine, besides
the years we spent working together. He has been and will be missed.

12Mar12 Young Talents Take All By Surprise At Most Successful Moomba Masters For Many Years
Tim Bradstreet AUS
Today will be a Moomba day to be remembered for many years. Police estimates are that 200k spectators were in the Moomba area and 400k in the wider Festival area. Apart from perfect weather and extraordinary crowds on site, to the surprise of many, it was the youngest athletes who captured both the hearts of the fans and the medals on Melbourne?s Yarra River this time in the Open events. Whitney McClintock CAN (22) dominated Tricks, Slalom and Overall, Nate Smith USA (20) stole the show in Slalom, and Tim Bradstreet (19) took Jump Gold. Iris Cambray FRA (18) took Silver in Tricks with great performances also from Erika Lang USA (16) and Anna Gay USA (11). Against the very best in the world, this is a clear sign that the next generation has already arrived and the old order is about to change.
The other exceptional performances came from Natalia Berdnikova BLR in Jump, Joel Wing AUS in Overall and Aliaksei Zharnasek BLR in Tricks. For all the score details, see :
It was like the old days today ! Those huge crowds have returned and even Night Jump had a packed arena. As usual, the day was full of high points. Tricks Semi-Finals came first and 16 year-old Erika Lang from Arizona, USA, was the star of the show. Having beaten both Clementine Lucine FRA and Natalia Berdnikova BLR today, make sure you catch her performance in the Monday Finals Webcast at 09.45hrs local time. In Men Tricks, World Record Holder Aliaksei Zharnasek BLR recovered fully from his Round 1 disappointment with a leading score of 11,470 today. That Final on Monday is at 10.30hrs local time. More...
10Mar12 Moomba Saturday Brings Out The Melbourne Crowds And Webcast Trials Prove Successful For The Weekend
Young talent really did set the scene today ! In perfect weather again , Round 1 of Women and Men Tricks kicked off with 15 Women chasing 8 Semi-Final places and 15 Men chasing 12 places behind the Nautique 200 competition boat. This forced all to treat it like the Finals. With both World Champions and World Record Holders involved, it was a fantastic battle. In Women Tricks, early falls by Danyelle Bennett USA and Alex Lauretano USA ruled them out. The big scores came from 19 year-old Iris Cambray FRA and 16 year old Erika Lang USA. However, World Record Holder Clementine Lucine FRA was not far behind. This will guarantee a great Semi Finals on Sunday. In Men Tricks, World Overall Champion Adam Sedlmajer CZE also went down early and did not move forward. Again, young talent shone through. Joshua Briant AUS aged 16 clocked up the second highest score. Only 22 year-old Herman Beliakou BLR could beat him. The next generations already looks good!
09Mar12 Moomba Friday Brings Many Surprises - And Saturday To Bring Live Webcast
Only Regina Jaquess USA scores on the 10.75m line
With the best weather seen at Moomba weekend for many years, today was full of drama, surprises and sunshine. Kicking off with Women Slalom Round 1, Karina Nowlan AUS, Clementine Lucine FRA and Danyelle Bennett USA, all missed gates and will not go forward. With 21 Skiers chasing 12 places, nobody got on to the 11.25m line till the 15th Skier entered the Yarra River. This was Karen Stevens CAN. Her 3 buoys on this line pushed her far into the lead. Regina Jaquess USA was last out. On clearing the 12m line, there was a gate camera malfunction. Following a resulting delay, she left the dock cold on the 11.25m line but got an ovation for her score of 1.5 buoys on the 10.75m line - the only one to beat Stevens.
World Champion Natalia Berdnikava BLR dominates Jump
Round 1 of Women and Men Jump was also a thriller. Here Marion Mathieu FRA was the first to break 50m. Only the World Champion, Natalia Berdnikova BLR could beat her. This she did with an enormous distance of 56.2m - clearly in a league of her own right now. In the Men event, 16 year old Ryan Baldwin NZL held the lead for some time with a new Personal Best score of 49.3m. Timothy Bradstreet AUS was the first to break 60m with a lead distance of 66.7m. That was on the lower 1.65m Ramp ! Jimmy Siemers USA caught all by surprise with a very impressive 67.0m to take the lead. Nobody could beat this pair till the last Jumper entered the arena, World Champion and World Record Holder Freddy Krueger. His 67.6m was the jump of the day but just 0.6m ahead of Jimmy. The Semi-Finals will certainly be ones to watch closely.

05Dec11 In Memoriam
Ray Stokes - AUS - 1960 - 2011
Ray's contribution to our sport of Waterskiing has been truly revolutionary. Growing up in a home where his father Noel was already a major contributor to the sport in Australia gave him a perfect start. His love of Jumping combined with his enormous Skydiving and Wingsuit Flying experience gave him a unique insight to what makes Jumpers fly ! Understanding the dynamics of Aircraft lift resulted in him producing the first Stokes Tip on Jump Skis - mimicking the leading edge design of an aircraft's wing. This progressed to his advanced and revolutionary Jump ski designs and specialized compression Jump suits and equipment - and eventually to the establishment of www.stokesskis.com
On the water, many also regard Ray as one of the best Jump and Slalom coaches of all time. His patience and technical skill at all levels is world-renowned. Having coached many National Teams and travelled the globe, he was also the coaching inspiration behind the World Jump Records of Emma Sheers AUS and June Fladborg DEN. Ray was respected wherever he travelled as a very special talent.
If a successful life is measured by how many people were certain that you were their best friend, that medal was fully earned by our dear friend RAY STOKES. With over 29,000 CaringBridge personal messages on his site, Ray had an extraordinary impact on almost everybody he met. Sadly our dear friend Ray lost his brave battle with Cancer two days ago in Hospital in Melbourne. Given just 90 days to live on January 19th 2011, he pushed that out to nine months through sheer determination. His treatments were tough but in all that time, he kept smiling. With the help true friends, he fought the battle. June Fladborg's caring help is beyond words and going through so much with him made such a difference to his final weeks on earth. Ray was special and his pain has now ended. June and Mark Frawley will keep his friends in touch over the coming days. Our hearts go out to Ray's two boys and family and of course to all his very close friends. Rest in peace Ray Stokes.

World Disabled Championships Women's Overall
Delphine Le Sausse FRA
Jessica Radmilovic USA
Blessed by good weather including mostly favorable winds, the 10th edition of the IWWF World Disabled Championships concluded in perfect fashion with a world record by the last jumper. It was as if it were a scripted scenario, made for the movies. Defending world jump champion in the MP3 category (now combined with all MPs into the new seated category) and current world record holder, bested his own record with the longest jump ever by a seated skier of 26.6m before taking a tour around the lake instead of his final jump to a rousing ovation.
The top three teams, as was the case two years ago, were in order USA, Italy and France. The U.S. won its sixth title of a possible 10 and exhibited the most depth. However, even though five scores are counted in each of the three events towards the team overall (a total of 15 event scores), France garnered the third place on the team podium with four athletes.
There were six world records set and approved at the event. Records are kept in each of the individual categories rather than in seated, standing and vision impaired.
MP2 women Jessica Radmilovic, USA, in tricks (780pts) and slalom (4 buoys at 37kph/18.25m on the outer course). She remains the only MP2 woman to have completed a pass on the outer course.
A/L1 men Jamie McDonald, AUS, in jump (17.4m).
MP3 women 2010 Disabled Athlete of the Year Delphine Le Sausse, FRA, in tricks (1340)
V1 men 2010 Disabled Athlete of the Year Daniele Cassioli, ITA, in jump (21.1m)
MP3 men Darryl Hoyle, AUS, in jump (26.3) - reduced from 26.6 upon replotting.
In conclusion, the organization of the event headed up by Larry Downes was brilliant and resulted in a lengthy standing ovation at the final banquet for him and his crew.

Freddy Krueger USA and Jaret Llewellyn will face off for the World Championship
In what promises to be a classic match up, Freddy Krueger USA who jumped 65.2m and Jaret Llewellyn CAN who edged him out for the top spot with 65.4 m will face off once again in Dubna to see who reigns supreme. The two jumpers have faced the exact same situation many times at the same venue during World Cup Competitions held here between 2005 and 2009. Jaret who is coming off an injury, was first out in seed 1, but posted the score that no one could catch. Tim Bradstreet AUS was third with 65 m, but performed on the 1.65m ramp, and is a credible threat to dethrone the reigning champions. With a little over only 4m separating the entire final field, it could also be anybody's game.
In women's jump, Natalia Berdnikova BLR led the Belarus attack which found both she and her teammate, Iryna Turets in the top two spots in women jump. Like the men, another young Australian phenom, Jacinta Carroll is in the mix, placing third.

22Feb11 New Information for the World Championships
Peter Felix can be described as ?A Man for all Seasons?. He was one of the pioneer waterskiers at Ruislip Lido with David Nations. I do not know when he started but believe it would have been around 1953. He competed and represented GB internationally. He was the British Slalom Champion in the four years 1955-58 and Overall Champion 1957 and 1958. On the competitive front after retiring from competition Peter continued to be active on the water and was captain of the British teams at the World Championships in Vichy in 1963 and in Surfers Paradise in 1965.
Peter served on the British Waterski Federation Management Committee for many years and was elected its Chairman 1970 to 1974. As a Management member he had the task of integrating Racing with waterskiing as a whole which he did with great feeling and skill. He was instrumental together with Tony Richardson in bringing the Earl of Snowdon as our Patron.
Peter then with his wife Helena worked tirelessly with Tony Edge for the British Disabled Waterski Association. They both raised money for the Charity by running the London Marathon leading blind runners on a number of occasions. Peter chaired the BDWSA and became its President.
In between all this Peter found time to write and publish a book ? An introduction to waterskiing.
Peter?s work has been recognised not just by the BDWSA and British Federation which both elected him Honorary Life Member but also first in 1977 by her Majesty when he was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal for services to sport during the first 25 years of her reign and more recently with the OBE.

25Jan11 Ray Stokes is in our thoughts
Ray and his boys at Moomba 2010
Few in our sport have influenced so profoundly so many Waterskiers around the world. Few have been so admired and respected. Australia's Ray Stokes has a very special gift in training and encouraging Skiers of all ability, in product design and development and in coaching at the very highest level. His training of both Emma Sheers AUS and June Fladborg DEN in breaking World Jump Records is where he excelled. Most of all, he has created happiness wherever his career took him.
Very recently, Ray Stokes was diagnosed with terminal Cancer. His remaining time with us is limited. This has shocked our Waterski community. He is now in Melbourne with his friends and family making arrangements for the future of his two boys, his major concern. Most of all he needs our support at this special time. Ray's many friends are asked to go to this special Website to do what they can to show their appreciation for this special person when he needs us most www.stokesskis.com
A www.CaringBridge.org page has also been opened for those who would like to send messages to Ray. Please enter his name as one word on the entry page - raystokes - to make the contact.

Pierre Jaeger - SUI - 1926-2010
Our great Waterski friend, Pierre Jaeger, from Switzerland passed away
on 20th July 2010 at the age of 84.
Pierre was a member of the Swiss National Team in the early years of
Waterski, 1947-1955. I had the privilege of knowing Pierre since 1961.
He was always a wonderful supporter of our sport. He took over the
presidency of the Swiss Waterski Federation in 1988 for 10 years. During
this time he created a Waterski site in picturesque Bourg-en-Bresse
(France), where many international competitions, including a Pro Tour
Stop and the European Waterski Championships where held. Unfortunately
he lost his 24 year old son in 2000 due to Leukemia.
The Waterski Family will always keep Pierre in our memories.

08Mar10 Miraculous Moomba Recovery Produces Great Performances On Semi-Final Sunday
Will Asher GBR
Just 24 hours ago, many thought that the 50th Anniversary Moomba Masters here in Melbourne would be canceled. With sudden 120 kph winds, a frightening and unprecedented hailstone storm, shredded trees, flooded roads and ice accumulations all over the place, it had the air of a calamity Movie. This morning, on arrival at daybreak at the Yarra River site, the floating debris posed a real challenge for the organizers. However, this is Australia and the can do attitude will always win. Within 30 minutes or so, a team of volunteers went up river in tiny flat-topped boats to trap the debris before it arrived on site. It worked. What followed was an action packed day with sunshine which included the Womens Slalom Semi-Final, Men and Womens Tricks Semi-Finals, Men and Womens Jump Semi-Finals, plus Mens Slalom Semi Finals. Following the life-threatening weather of yesterday, this was an enormous achievement by the 50th Moomba team.

25Dec09 IWWF Bologna Office Is Vital To Our Success
Without our many very willing volunteers and supporters, the IWWF could not achieve anything like the recognition and successes of recent years. Many meet each other along the way at competitions, congresses, seminars, etc and this helps to build the team spirit. However, very few ever get an opportunity to meet the very talented Andrea Landau who runs our IWWF office in Bologna, Italy. Andrea works closely with Kuno Ritschard, Gill Hill, Des Burke-Kennedy, all of the council chairmen, etc,. and does an outstanding job. At times it must be a lonely occupation working alone and we thought it would be nice to wish Andrea a very Happy Christmas on behalf of all in our sport and at the same time thank her for her much appreciated dedication over the years. Well done Andrea.
The Tournament Council will establish Official IWWF Ranking Lists for the 35+, 45+ and 55+ divisions to help qualify individual entries similar to other World Championships.

17Oct09 In Memoriam
Peter Pearl - GBR - 1924-2009
The Water Ski world has lost a good friend and worker with the news that Peter Pearl of Great Britain has died at the grand age of 85.
Peter started water skiing in the 1960?s and soon became involved in the British Water Ski Federation serving on the Tournament and Coaching committees for many years. He travelled the country coaching and encouraging competition water skiing for a very long time. It was in that capacity that I first met him in 1971 when he spent hours in the boat trying to improve my tricking skills. It is absolutely not his fault that these hours were wasted!
His enthusiasm was such that he served on the Administrative Committee of Group II (now EAME) of the World Water Ski Union (as it was then known) and in 1973 was elected as Secretary General of the Group.
This appointment placed him on the WWSU Executive Board where in 1981 he was elected as Secretary General, alongside Jean Jacques Finsterwald who was the President at the time. He held this position until 1983.
But Peter?s commitment was not limited to just tournament water skiing, and he played a hugely important role in the development of barefooting in Europe, serving as the first Council Chairman. He fought (and won) to bring the world together in uniting the rules to stage the first World Barefoot Championships in 1978. His interest also extended to cableskiing and he was a leading light in the formation of the European Championships.
In recognition of his services to the European, African and Middle East Region he was made an Honorary Member of EAME in 1996 at the Brighton Congress.
Peter was a man who always said exactly what was on his mind but underneath there was a guy absolutely intent on trying to bring water skiing to the forefront in the sporting world; who said he would do something and did it and who was extremely reluctant to take ?no? for an answer.
He will be missed by all who know him. Our sympathies go to his daughter, Kim, and her two daughters. The funeral will be held on Monday 26th October at Mortlake, London. If you need further information please contact me at the email address below.
Anyone wishing to send a message to his family may do so by emailing me and I will forward them on. Write to firstname.lastname@example.org
Submitted by Gill Hill 15 October 2009
I would like to thank everyone who has sent such kind words to me and my family following the death of my father, Peter Pearl.
He was obviously a very special person in our lives, and it has been lovely to be reminded how important he was to so many other people all over the world.
It always meant more to him to encourage others so that they could flourish, rather than chase glory for himself.
He was so proud when one of his ?youngsters? won a gold.
I hope the sports that were so important to him continue to flourish and everyone who knew him remembers him as they tussle in committee rooms and applaud winners on the platforms.
Many thanks again for your kind words and thoughts.

Vallensbaek Mayor Kurt Hockerup and Danish Waterski Federation President Frank Tengberg
Just two weeks ago, it seemed that the entire world was at the 2009 Waterski World Championships in Calgary, Canada. With some serious jet lag and a very successful event in Ukraine last weekend, our World Champions have had little opportunity to display their talents since then. However, this week the annual Europe Africa Middle East (EAME) Championships here in Vallensbaek, Denmark, gave all a chance to get back on the water to challenge for some serious titles. Launched in 1947, the EAME Championships this year attracted 85 skiers from 19 countries. The Vallensbaek Club site comprises two excellent man-made lakes and is located just twenty minutes from Copenhagen Airport. More...

06Aug09 IWSF Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held in Calgary
Britt and Tawn Larsen USA, Tory Baggiano USA, Andrea Alessi ITA, Kaye Thurlow-Faulkner AUS and Susi Graham CAN
A maximum of five individuals may be selected in each two-year period for the International Hall of Fame. The primary selection considerations in voting for a skier are skiing record in the World Championships, World Records set, sportsmanship, character and integrity. For officials, the primary considerations are significant contributions to waterskiing at international level over a period of at least 15 years. The first Hall of Fame members were elected in 1989.
Flames Central in downtown Calgary is a very impressive theatre. Its huge multi video screens cover the walls and stage area. Tonight, Wm.P.Barlow Jr, Chairman of the Selection Committee, launched the Hall of Fame ceremony to a backdrop of great waterski photos and videos on the screens and the packed attendance gave the inductees a very warm reception. This was a spectacular event and the new Hall of Fame members above will now join the elite membership of this exclusive club!

The site of the Calgary World Championships
The past 24 hours here in Calgary have reminded us all that we are indeed involved in an outdoor sport! The site is magnificent, the organization is first class and the entertainment for the athletes and officials last night at Calgary?s Lynnwood Ranch set a very friendly tone. Seeing our Skiers in Cowboy hats and enjoying the Line Dance routines certainly helped to settle the nerves.

26Jul09 The Closing Moments Of The 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung Taiwan
Men's Barefoot Winners : Heinrich Sam RSA Silver, Keith St.Onge USA Gold, David Small GBR Bronze
Women's Barefoot Winners : Ashleigh Stebbings AUS Silver, Elaine Heller USA Gold, Shannon Heller USA Bronze
So, the final day for our sport here in Kaohsiung has arrived. The gods of the temples surrounding Lotus Pond, including Mazu, the deity of fishermen which governs weather at the Temple of Emperor Yuan, must have heard the prayers of the Barefoot Skiers. Fine conditions and calm waters arrived just in time for the final events of the Barefoot competition at the World Games 2009. The deluge on Saturday meant that two events, Men and Women?s Barefoot Tricks, had to be rescheduled to the planned reserve day today, Sunday. The Barefooters were certainly itching to get on the water to take advantage of the prime conditions. They needed some restraint in order to ensure that everything was in place including the TV camera man in the boat plus the safety and rescue teams ashore and on the water. More...
26Jul09 Rain Again Interrupts Play At The 2009 World Games In Kaohsiung
L to R : Wakeboard Winners : Raimi Merrit USA Silver, Dallas Friday USA Gold, Miku Asai JPN Bronze
Saturday 25th July 2009 proved a challenging day for the Chief Judge of the Waterski events at the World Games. Having to juggle an already tight competition schedule which was repeatedly interrupted by torrential showers, Dimos Alexopoulos (GRE) and the IWSF team lived up to the challenge. All but Men and Women?s Barefoot Tricks remain to be completed on Sunday 25th, the reserve day established in advance for this very purpose. Good planning. More...

IWSF President Kuno Ritschard and MS Emily Hsu, CEO of Kaohsiung Organising Committee, presented medals and mascots respectively to Caroline Hensley (USA) bronze, Manon Costard (FRA) silver, and Kate Adriaensen (BEL) gold.
This was a challenging day for our athletes. Rain squalls passed over the World Games City of Kaohsiung in Taiwan. Variable weather conditions impacted the competition with several stoppages. However, after the showers the waters of the Lotus Pond Waterski site once again flattened out, providing better than expected conditions. Barefoot Jump and Tricks, Tournament Slalom, Tricks and Jump, plus Wakeboard, were all on the agenda for today. More...
23Jul09 The World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung Taiwan continue with some surprises.
Manon Costard FRA in action on Lotus Pond in Women's Slalom
Lotus Pond looked at its best as World Games Women?s Tournament Slalom competitors lined up at the dock for the start of the competition at the 0800hrs. The World Cup star, Marie Vympranietsova (GRE), set the standard of 5/55/13.00m. Barbora Kolesarova (SVK) upped the level with one buoy on the shorter 12m line. Manon Costard (FRA) lifted it further with 2.5 buoys on that rope length. Caroline Hensley (USA) responded with three buoys leaving the last two skiers to challenge for the slalom first place overall points. Kate Adriaensen BEL went next raising the bar to 5@12m. Last off the dock was New Zealander Megan Ross (NZ) but she just managed 0.5 buoy on the 12m line. Kate Adriaensen was therefore awarded the 1000 points for Tournament Slalom.

World Games Opening Ceremony (file photo)
The City of Kaohsiung with a population of 1.5 million, is located on the south west coast of Taiwan and facing Hong Kong over the horizon. The flags of 33 nations fluttered in the light breeze during the Opening Ceremony of the Waterski, Wakeboard and Barefoot World Games competitions. This was a far cry from the conditions of the previous weekend when a typhoon hit the Kaohsiung area. This caused major disruption to the many outdoor World Games sports and in particular canoe polo, which ultimately was switched indoors to a swimming pool. More...

Mourning Sergio Zanardi ? Italy
Anyone who ever met Sergio Zanardi will never forget him. He was one of the real
characters of our sport and will be sadly missed. Sergio was appointed Official Driver
at many World, European and international events. This was the pre-speed control era.
Sergio could clock out perfect times all day long for the Jumpers - almost with his eyes closed.
With his deep sun tan, unmistakeable Italian personality and broad smile, he was as much a
centre of attention as any of the Jump super-stars on the dock. Sergio, we will miss you greatly.
On behalf of the International Water Ski Federation and the whole Waterski Family
I would like to pass our deepest sympathies to his many family and friends.

17Jun09 Tournament Council Expands Individual Entry Qualifications for World Championships
The IWSF Tournament Council has decided to expand the entry qualifications for the World Championships to a 2 year basis since the Championships are held every two years. The principle is that the Ranking and Elite List Qualifications may be used from the preceding year, but discounted by 25%. This is the same qualification formula used for the World Cup. The longer time span for entry can account for an injury layoff period that might unfairly affect a skiers rating in the specific 1 year period previously allowed. More...

Carole Chase Loses Battle With Lung Cancer
Carole Chase, wife of former NCWSA chairman and now IWSF World University Commission chairman, Phil Chase passed
away early on the morning of March 3rd after
a short but brutal fight with small cell carcinoma of the lung.
While Carole's name may not be readily recognizable by many of the present day NCWSA skiers,
she was a common fixture in the scorers tent at over 100 NCWSA events through the 80's and 90's.
Two years ago, Carole was involved in a freak auto accident that resulted in her heart stopping for about 15 minutes.
Through a miraculous new techinique called hypothermia protocol and 3 months in the ICU, she survived.
Though confined to a wheelchair because of the resultant anoxic brain injury, she at least was able to
see and hold her beautiful twin granddaughters who were born in August.
In October, during the World University Championships, she was rushed to the hospital with
severe breathing problems that turned out to be caused by a rapidly growing mass on her right lung.
Four months of aggressive chemo-therapy could not stop the spread and the battle has been lost.
Yes. Carole was a smoker and, even though she gave it up 12 years ago, it's what brought her down.
One of her last requests was " Whenever you see somebody lighting up a cigarette, tell them about me".
No public service is planned but a Celebration of Life gathering will be held in Jefferson, Wisconsin
on June 6th, which was to have been her 50th anniversary.
The family suggests that anyone wishing to should make a donation to the American Cancer Society in her name.

Today, Friday, was the second last day of the FISU World University Waterski Championships here at Dongli Lake in Tianjin in China. The schedule listed the Preliminary Rounds of Men and Ladies Jump to kick off at 08.30hrs, followed by the Slalom Finals and Prize Giving Ceremonies. Nature intervened with strong side winds arriving from the Sea about 40 km to the east. Chief Judge Jeff Smith made a wise decision to delay the start for safety reasons till 09.15hrs. By that time it had improved but those lateral breezes added a caution element to the Jump Rounds.
The 2nd FISU World Waterski Championships continued today at Dongli Lake in Tianjin, China, in glorious sunshine and a slight cross breeze from the east. Chief Judge Jeff Smith (USA) gave the systems-go signal at 08.00hrs and the day finished ahead of schedule at 15.30hrs. The excellent management throughout and preparations by Phil Chase (USA) and China?s Waterski Federation, added to the enjoyment of all. The programme began with Men and Ladies Tricks ? Series 3, 2 and 1 ? and finished with Series 3 Men and Ladies Jump.

06Jan08 U21 Championships Close With Great Trick and Jump Performances
With 12 Men, 12 Ladies and 12 countries in the Tricks Finals, the names to watch for the future shone through.
In the Mens Tricks event, scores lower than 7000 points were rare. Three were over 9000. Franck Desboyeaux (FRA) and Adam Sedlmajer (CZE) got 9230 and 9250 points. Sedlmajer was coached by the famous Cory Pickos (USA). However the World U21 title today went to Cory's son Adam Pickos. At just 16 years of age his 9430 was unbeatable. He may even catch up with his Father's 22 World Records at this rate ! In the Ladies Tricks event, over 7000 was needed to get into the top four slots. Michale Briant (AUS) scored 7360 and that was only enough for 3rd place. Overall contender Whitney McClintock (CAN) scored 7390 to take 2nd. The World Cup star Marion Aynaud (FRA) pulled off a Toe Wake 540 Back to Front to wow the crowd and take the title with 7980 points plus a new PB. Amazing standard for such young athletes. We have some exciting years ahead.
Today was another scorching day both on and off the water for the first of the Finals at the Miranda Santiago Chile site. In 32C / 94Fh sunshine and flat water, almost all the Slalom Skiers improved on their Preliminary Round scores. The Ski Nautique boat pulled the first of the 12 Men Slalom Finals skiers in to the course at exactly 10.00am. While only one scored on the 10.75m / 39 Off rope shortening in the Prelims, five got there today in the Finals. Canada's Jason McClintock was first with 2.5 buoys. Jonathan Travers (USA) pushed it up to 4 buoys. Felipe Miranda (CHI) with a heavily bandaged burst eardrum scored 3. Martin Bartlsky (SVK) got 0.5. Cale Burdick (USA) was best in the Prelims and with an outstanding score of 4.5 buoys in today's Finals, he took the U21 World Slalom Champion title. With nine countries represented in the Finals, the global spread of talent is impressive. More...

04Jan08 Young Talent And Real International Skill Create Excellent U21 Worlds Last
Michale Briant (AUS) receives congratulations from mother ZuZi on setting a new U21 Championships Tricks Record of 7870 points
We began as usual today with perfect water conditions, 30C sunshine and an
enormous amount of talent at the Miranda Lake in Santiago. Ladies Series 2 and
1 were the morning events. With 10 athletes in Series two and 11 in Series 1,
the 12 Finals places opened the door for at least one Series 2 contestant. Who
could have guessed the outcome ! With a personal best score of 4650 points,
the athlete to dominate Series 2 was 13 year old Nicole Naser from Chile. It
was an outstanding display. Watch out for her name in headlines in the future
- and also in the Finals on Saturday. In Series 1, it was youth all over
again. While Whitney McClintock (CAN) and Marion Aynaud (FRA) were strong
favorites, none could beat 18 year old Michale Briant (AUS) with a score of 7870 points. It is shaping up
to be a high quality Final tomorrow - and watch out for the youngest rising

03Jan08 Burdick And Chardin Dominate In Chile Today
Cale Burdick (USA) laps the field in slalom
Today the sun was as hot as ever, the light head breeze was what the doctor
ordered and the U21 Skiers excelled. It was a day of three halves! First we
had the Mens Series 2 and 1 Slalom Preliminary Rounds. Four athletes got 4
buoys on the 11.25m/38 Off line. They were Derek Kirby (CAN), Felipe Simioni
(BRA), Martin Bartalsky (SVK) and Felipe Miranda (CHI). This guaranteed second
place scores. One Skier dominated all and by a margin of FIVE BUOYS. This was
Cale Burdick (USA). Will he be the U21 World Slalom Champion? Tune in on
Saturday to find out. Twelve contenders will all go for it. More...
02Jan08 Preliminary Rounds Produce Exciting Start To U21 World Championships
Karina Nowlan (AUS) set a new tournament record of email@example.com
Today was a day for Slalom and Tricks plus hot sunshine and perfect water at
the Miranda Waterski School in Santiago, Chile. Series 3 Men Slalom came
first. The best score in this group was 5 buoys on the 12m line / 35 off from
Brazilian Caio Simioni. Then we switched to Ladies Slalom Series 2 and 1. The
19 year old Michale Briant (AUS) held the lead till the 16 year old Peruvian,
Delfina Cuglievan, added a half buoy to that. However, with 12 athletes in
Series 1 yet to come, their chances of a Finals place did not appear great. In
Series one, Karina Nowlan (AUS) was just sensational. Her score of 3 buoys on
the 10.75m / 39 off line behind the 375hp Nautique boat, added a full six
buoys to the U21 Championships Slalom Record set in 2003 by Regina Jaquess
(USA). Even the new World Slalom Champion Nicole Arthur (GBR) could not get
beyond 2 buoys on the 11.25m line / 38 off. You will see the full results here
on this site but the great news was that the two youngest competitors,
Briant and Cuglievan, succeeded in joining the super stars Arthur and Nowlan
in the Finals on Saturday. More...
