Asian Beach Games Tricker copes with the conditions
24 trick skiers and 36 wakeboarders, representing 13 countries have assembled here in Muscat, Oman, for water skiing’s and wakeboarding’s first participation in the Asian Beach Games from 8th -16th. December 2010.
Sanctioned by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the inaugural games were held in Bali in 2008.
While conditions in the bay at Qantab have been calm all week, winds of 60km/hr in the Middle East have disrupted shipping in the Suez Canal and Red Sea. Consequently the seas around Oman have been rougher than expected making conditions challenging for both skiers and riders.

Pierre Jaeger - SUI - 1926-2010
Our great Waterski friend, Pierre Jaeger, from Switzerland passed away
on 20th July 2010 at the age of 84.
Pierre was a member of the Swiss National Team in the early years of
Waterski, 1947-1955. I had the privilege of knowing Pierre since 1961.
He was always a wonderful supporter of our sport. He took over the
presidency of the Swiss Waterski Federation in 1988 for 10 years. During
this time he created a Waterski site in picturesque Bourg-en-Bresse
(France), where many international competitions, including a Pro Tour
Stop and the European Waterski Championships where held. Unfortunately
he lost his 24 year old son in 2000 due to Leukemia.
The Waterski Family will always keep Pierre in our memories.

08Mar10 Miraculous Moomba Recovery Produces Great Performances On Semi-Final Sunday
Will Asher GBR
Just 24 hours ago, many thought that the 50th Anniversary Moomba Masters here in Melbourne would be canceled. With sudden 120 kph winds, a frightening and unprecedented hailstone storm, shredded trees, flooded roads and ice accumulations all over the place, it had the air of a calamity Movie. This morning, on arrival at daybreak at the Yarra River site, the floating debris posed a real challenge for the organizers. However, this is Australia and the can do attitude will always win. Within 30 minutes or so, a team of volunteers went up river in tiny flat-topped boats to trap the debris before it arrived on site. It worked. What followed was an action packed day with sunshine which included the Womens Slalom Semi-Final, Men and Womens Tricks Semi-Finals, Men and Womens Jump Semi-Finals, plus Mens Slalom Semi Finals. Following the life-threatening weather of yesterday, this was an enormous achievement by the 50th Moomba team.

25Dec09 IWWF Bologna Office Is Vital To Our Success
Andrea Landau
Without our many very willing volunteers and supporters, the IWWF could not achieve anything like the recognition and successes of recent years. Many meet each other along the way at competitions, congresses, seminars, etc and this helps to build the team spirit. However, very few ever get an opportunity to meet the very talented Andrea Landau who runs our IWWF office in Bologna, Italy. 17Oct09 In Memoriam
Peter Pearl - GBR - 1924-2009
The Water Ski world has lost a good friend and worker with the news that Peter Pearl of Great Britain has died at the grand age of 85.
Peter started water skiing in the 1960’s and soon became involved in the British Water Ski Federation serving on the Tournament and Coaching committees for many years. He travelled the country coaching and encouraging competition water skiing for a very long time. It was in that capacity that I first met him in 1971 when he spent hours in the boat trying to improve my tricking skills. It is absolutely not his fault that these hours were wasted!
His enthusiasm was such that he served on the Administrative Committee of Group II (now EAME) of the World Water Ski Union (as it was then known) and in 1973 was elected as Secretary General of the Group.
This appointment placed him on the WWSU Executive Board where in 1981 he was elected as Secretary General, alongside Jean Jacques Finsterwald who was the President at the time. He held this position until 1983.
But Peter’s commitment was not limited to just tournament water skiing, and he played a hugely important role in the development of barefooting in Europe, serving as the first Council Chairman. He fought (and won) to bring the world together in uniting the rules to stage the first World Barefoot Championships in 1978. His interest also extended to cableskiing and he was a leading light in the formation of the European Championships.
In recognition of his services to the European, African and Middle East Region he was made an Honorary Member of EAME in 1996 at the Brighton Congress.
Peter was a man who always said exactly what was on his mind but underneath there was a guy absolutely intent on trying to bring water skiing to the forefront in the sporting world; who said he would do something and did it and who was extremely reluctant to take “no” for an answer.
He will be missed by all who know him. Our sympathies go to his daughter, Kim, and her two daughters. The funeral will be held on Monday 26th October at Mortlake, London. If you need further information please contact me at the email address below.
Anyone wishing to send a message to his family may do so by emailing me and I will forward them on. Write to secgen@iwwfed.com
Submitted by Gill Hill 15 October 2009
I would like to thank everyone who has sent such kind words to me and my family following the death of my father, Peter Pearl.
He was obviously a very special person in our lives, and it has been lovely to be reminded how important he was to so many other people all over the world.
It always meant more to him to encourage others so that they could flourish, rather than chase glory for himself.
He was so proud when one of his “youngsters” won a gold.
I hope the sports that were so important to him continue to flourish and everyone who knew him remembers him as they tussle in committee rooms and applaud winners on the platforms.
Many thanks again for your kind words and thoughts.

So, the final day for our sport here in Kaohsiung has arrived. The gods of the temples surrounding Lotus Pond, including Mazu, the deity of fishermen which governs weather at the Temple of Emperor Yuan, must have heard the prayers of the Barefoot Skiers. Fine conditions and calm waters arrived just in time for the final events of the Barefoot competition at the World Games 2009. The deluge on Saturday meant that two events, Men and Women’s Barefoot Tricks, had to be rescheduled to the planned reserve day today, Sunday. The Barefooters were certainly itching to get on the water to take advantage of the prime conditions. They needed some restraint in order to ensure that everything was in place including the TV camera man in the boat plus the safety and rescue teams ashore and on the water. More...

Manon Costard (FRA) lifted it further with 2.5 buoys on that rope length. Caroline Hensley (USA) responded with three buoys leaving the last two skiers to challenge for the slalom first place overall points. Kate Adriaensen BEL went next raising the bar to 5@12m. Last off the dock was New Zealander Megan Ross (NZ) but she just managed 0.5 buoy on the 12m line. Kate Adriaensen was therefore awarded the 1000 points for Tournament Slalom.

World Games Opening Ceremony (file photo)
The City of Kaohsiung with a population of 1.5 million, is located on the south west coast of Taiwan and facing Hong Kong over the horizon. The flags of 33 nations fluttered in the light breeze during the Opening Ceremony of the Waterski, Wakeboard and Barefoot World Games competitions. This was a far cry from the conditions of the previous weekend when a typhoon hit the Kaohsiung area. This caused major disruption to the many outdoor World Games sports and in particular canoe polo, which ultimately was switched indoors to a swimming pool. More...

Mourning Sergio Zanardi – Italy
Anyone who ever met Sergio Zanardi will never forget him. He was one of the real
characters of our sport and will be sadly missed. Sergio was appointed Official Driver
at many World, European and international events. This was the pre-speed control era.
Sergio could clock out perfect times all day long for the Jumpers - almost with his eyes closed.
With his deep sun tan, unmistakeable Italian personality and broad smile, he was as much a
centre of attention as any of the Jump super-stars on the dock. Sergio, we will miss you greatly.
On behalf of the International Water Ski Federation and the whole Waterski Family
I would like to pass our deepest sympathies to his many family and friends.

17Jun09 Tournament Council Expands Individual Entry Qualifications for World Championships
The IWSF Tournament Council has decided to expand the entry qualifications for the World Championships to a 2 year basis since the Championships are held every two years. The principle is that the Ranking and Elite List Qualifications may be used from the preceding year, but discounted by 25%. This is the same qualification formula used for the World Cup. The longer time span for entry can account for an injury layoff period that might unfairly affect a skiers rating in the specific 1 year period previously allowed. More...

The IWSF Development Commission (DC) held their latest Coaching Seminar in Barcelona last weekend for EAME coaches. The seminar was superbly organised by Domingo Ramos and Anthony LeChevalier of the Spanish Water Ski Federation and was attended by 34 coaches from 6 countries. The seminar was presented by Commission members Jean Michel Cau (FRA) and John Wood (GBR) and used a multi media format in two languages. For the 2nd time a delegation from Iran attended the seminar and there was also a strong representation from Sweden with further coaches from Norway, Belgium, Serbia, Slovakia and of course Spain. IWSF Vice President & EAME President Alain Amade also attended to address the coaches about the work of EAME and the importance of coaching within this as EAME continues to develop the sport.
This was the fourth seminar in the series to be held in a Mediterranean country as the IWSF DC continue their strategy to promote attendance at Regional Games, in this instance the Mediterranean Games. This has already proven successful with 10 countries now entered for the 2009 Games, to be held in Pescara (ITA) in July.

Carole Chase Loses Battle With Lung Cancer
Carole Chase, wife of former NCWSA chairman and now IWSF World University Commission chairman, Phil Chase passed
away early on the morning of March 3rd after
a short but brutal fight with small cell carcinoma of the lung.
While Carole's name may not be readily recognizable by many of the present day NCWSA skiers,
she was a common fixture in the scorers tent at over 100 NCWSA events through the 80's and 90's.
Two years ago, Carole was involved in a freak auto accident that resulted in her heart stopping for about 15 minutes.
Through a miraculous new techinique called hypothermia protocol and 3 months in the ICU, she survived.
Though confined to a wheelchair because of the resultant anoxic brain injury, she at least was able to
see and hold her beautiful twin granddaughters who were born in August.
In October, during the World University Championships, she was rushed to the hospital with
severe breathing problems that turned out to be caused by a rapidly growing mass on her right lung.
Four months of aggressive chemo-therapy could not stop the spread and the battle has been lost.
Yes. Carole was a smoker and, even though she gave it up 12 years ago, it's what brought her down.
One of her last requests was " Whenever you see somebody lighting up a cigarette, tell them about me".
No public service is planned but a Celebration of Life gathering will be held in Jefferson, Wisconsin
on June 6th, which was to have been her 50th anniversary.
The family suggests that anyone wishing to should make a donation to the American Cancer Society in her name.

Today, Friday, was the second last day of the FISU World University Waterski Championships here at Dongli Lake in Tianjin in China. The schedule listed the Preliminary Rounds of Men and Ladies Jump to kick off at 08.30hrs, followed by the Slalom Finals and Prize Giving Ceremonies. Nature intervened with strong side winds arriving from the Sea about 40 km to the east. Chief Judge Jeff Smith made a wise decision to delay the start for safety reasons till 09.15hrs. By that time it had improved but those lateral breezes added a caution element to the Jump Rounds.
The 2nd FISU World Waterski Championships continued today at Dongli Lake in Tianjin, China, in glorious sunshine and a slight cross breeze from the east. Chief Judge Jeff Smith (USA) gave the systems-go signal at 08.00hrs and the day finished ahead of schedule at 15.30hrs. The excellent management throughout and preparations by Phil Chase (USA) and China’s Waterski Federation, added to the enjoyment of all. The programme began with Men and Ladies Tricks – Series 3, 2 and 1 – and finished with Series 3 Men and Ladies Jump.

06Jan08 U21 Championships Close With Great Trick and Jump Performances
With 12 Men, 12 Ladies and 12 countries in the Tricks Finals, the names to watch for the future shone through.
In the Mens Tricks event, scores lower than 7000 points were rare. Three were over 9000. Franck Desboyeaux (FRA) and Adam Sedlmajer (CZE) got 9230 and 9250 points. Sedlmajer was coached by the famous Cory Pickos (USA). However the World U21 title today went to Cory's son Adam Pickos. At just 16 years of age his 9430 was unbeatable. He may even catch up with his Father's 22 World Records at this rate ! In the Ladies Tricks event, over 7000 was needed to get into the top four slots. Michale Briant (AUS) scored 7360 and that was only enough for 3rd place. Overall contender Whitney McClintock (CAN) scored 7390 to take 2nd. The World Cup star Marion Aynaud (FRA) pulled off a Toe Wake 540 Back to Front to wow the crowd and take the title with 7980 points plus a new PB. Amazing standard for such young athletes. We have some exciting years ahead.

Michale Briant (AUS) receives congratulations from mother ZuZi on setting a new U21 Championships Tricks Record of 7870 points
We began as usual today with perfect water conditions, 30C sunshine and an
enormous amount of talent at the Miranda Lake in Santiago. Ladies Series 2 and
1 were the morning events. With 10 athletes in Series two and 11 in Series 1,
the 12 Finals places opened the door for at least one Series 2 contestant. Who
could have guessed the outcome ! With a personal best score of 4650 points,
the athlete to dominate Series 2 was 13 year old Nicole Naser from Chile. It
was an outstanding display. Watch out for her name in headlines in the future
- and also in the Finals on Saturday. In Series 1, it was youth all over
again. While Whitney McClintock (CAN) and Marion Aynaud (FRA) were strong
favorites, none could beat 18 year old Michale Briant (AUS) with a score of 7870 points. It is shaping up

03Jan08 Burdick And Chardin Dominate In Chile Today
Cale Burdick (USA) laps the field in slalom
Today the sun was as hot as ever, the light head breeze was what the doctor
ordered and the U21 Skiers excelled. It was a day of three halves! First we
had the Mens Series 2 and 1 Slalom Preliminary Rounds. Four athletes got 4
buoys on the 11.25m/38 Off line. They were Derek Kirby (CAN), Felipe Simioni
(BRA), Martin Bartalsky (SVK) and Felipe Miranda (CHI). This guaranteed second
place scores. One Skier dominated all and by a margin of FIVE BUOYS. This was
Cale Burdick (USA). Will he be the U21 World Slalom Champion? Tune in on
Saturday to find out. Twelve contenders will all go for it. More...
02Jan08 Preliminary Rounds Produce Exciting Start To U21 World Championships
Karina Nowlan (AUS) set a new tournament record of 3@10.75
Today was a day for Slalom and Tricks plus hot sunshine and perfect water at
the Miranda Waterski School in Santiago, Chile. Series 3 Men Slalom came
first. The best score in this group was 5 buoys on the 12m line / 35 off from
Brazilian Caio Simioni. Then we switched to Ladies Slalom Series 2 and 1. The
19 year old Michale Briant (AUS) held the lead till the 16 year old Peruvian,
Delfina Cuglievan, added a half buoy to that. However, with 12 athletes in
Series 1 yet to come, their chances of a Finals place did not appear great. In
Series one, Karina Nowlan (AUS) was just sensational. Her score of 3 buoys on
the 10.75m / 39 off line behind the 375hp Nautique boat, added a full six
buoys to the U21 Championships Slalom Record set in 2003 by Regina Jaquess
(USA). Even the new World Slalom Champion Nicole Arthur (GBR) could not get
beyond 2 buoys on the 11.25m line / 38 off. You will see the full results here
on this site but the great news was that the two youngest competitors,
Briant and Cuglievan, succeeded in joining the super stars Arthur and Nowlan
in the Finals on Saturday. More...

18Dec07 In Memoriam
In Memoriam Pierre Grimm
Dear friends
I have to let you know the sad news that Pierre Grimm, founder
of the Swiss Ski School in Clermont,Florida, has passed away last
Friday after a long fight against his lung cancer. Many of us had
probably a last talk with him during the World Championships in Linz.
Pierre has created a complete new concept for a Ski school in
constructing villas around the 5 lakes, including a Golf course.
The 2003 World Water Ski Championships and many other competitions
have been held successfully at his place.
We present our sincere sympathies to his wife Denise and his two
Daughters Caroline and Stephanie.
The IWSF Family will keep Pierrot in good Memory.
Best regards
