Neville May - Australia - 1928 - 2012
|
|
As one of the sports outstanding international officials, Neville May, of Australia, served as Chief Judge of the World Championships in 1977 in Milan, twice as Assistant Chief Judge, and once each as Assistant Homologator and Appointed Judge. But he is likely to be best remembered as an official for his service as Chief Judge of the Moomba Masters for each of the thirty four years from 1964 to the present. This uninterrupted service as Chief Judge of a major international competition is almost surely unequaled in the sport.
As one of the most highly respected members of the Asian Australasian Region, he has also served eight times as Chief Judge of the Group 111 Championships.
Neville was induction into the IWWF Hall of Fame in 1997 and the AWWF Hall of Fame in 2011.
Our thoughts with his wife Joyce, children Helen, Peter, Tony, Jodie and families.
He will be sadly missed.

05Jun12 IWWF invited to take part in China's first International Sports Resources Marketing and Service Trade Fair in Beijing

Des Burke-Kennedy presenting details of World CupBy the year 2015, China has set a target of generating $600 billion of Service Trade. During the inaugural Fair last week in Beijing, a total of 458 contracts were signed worth an estimated $60 billion. The Fair comprised an enormous exhibition and top level auditorium presentations. The IWWF was represented by IWWF President Kuno Ritschard, IWWF Vice President Thomas Lin and Des Burke-Kennedy, Media & Marketing Chairman. Thanks to the help of the State Water Sports Development Company, an information booth was provided where details of the World Cup and WAKEBOARD 2020 VISION opportunities were displayed for the thousands of visitors.
Des Burke-Kennedy made a presentation in the auditorium on how to use events such as the World Cup series to promote the interests of the hosts and sponsors on both the home and overseas markets. While thousands took part in the various exhibitions and presentations, only three guests were selected for a private face-to-face discussion with Mr. Liu Qi, President of the Beijing Olympic Games Committee and Member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. These were Kuno Ritschard, Des Burke-Kennedy and the World President of the International Advertising Association. As one of the most influential decision-makes in China, Kuno Ritschard presented Mr Liu Qi with copies of the World Cup promotional brochure and the new WAKEBOARD 2020 VISION brochure and DVD. He also stressed the importance of developing Cable Wakeboard and Waterski sites in China. Further announcements are expected shortly in Beijing on these developments. With the well publicised growth in current levels of disposable income in China, this IWWF marketing exercise was designed to maximise awareness of what our sport has to offer in the very competitive field of sports.

Alain Suchet - SUI - 1941-2012
|
I first met Alain after the World Championships in 1991. With the election of
Bilo Oliveras and Bruno Tavecchio to World President and Secretary General
it became necessary for the EAME Region, Group II in those days, to elect a
team to take over from them at the 1992 Congress in Dublin.
Talking, Alain and I hit it off straight away, finding that we thought alike,
and we agreed to stand as the EAME team and were elected. Our partnership
as President and Secretary General lasted over 8 years until Alain had health
problems and retired.
Alain was also an International First Class Tournament Judge and took that
work, as well as the position of Secretary General, very seriously. We did not
always agree but were well able to discuss matters and once we had reached
a decision, whether he had been in favour or not, he supported that decision
whole heartedly.
Alain was a hard man and a hard worker and we had many late night phone
calls. He had a good sense of humour and fun and that stood us in good stead.
He was a true EAME man, particularly at IWSF meeting. On more than one
occasion when seeing me agitated he quietly leaned over and told me to cool
down and stay silent. Alain too could be excitable so it was not one sided!
We had fallen out of touch since his retirement but hearing of his passing now
has made me think of the time when ‘Les Quatre AS’, we and our wives all
had the initials AS, enjoyed a good meal and a glass or two of wine, besides
the years we spent working together. He has been and will be missed.

Rene Daumas - MEX - 1926-2012
|
For three decades Rene Daumas has been the stabilizing force in Mexico and Latin American for the sport of water skiing. He was the President of the Pan American Region and a member of the World Water Ski Union Executive Board from 1978 to 1980. He also has served in many other capacities: as member of the World Tournament Council, judge at the World Championships in 1967, member of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee,
Vice-President of the Pan American Region and President and Secretary of the Mexican Water Ski Federation.
Rene Daumas has taken official roles whenever and wherever he was needed, but his greatest contribution to the sport has been in the development and encouragement of competitive water skiing throughout Latin America. To honour his tremendous contribution to our sport he was inducted into the IWWF Hall of Fame in 1996.

updated
The EYRES Action Sport Games Mandurah turned out to be the perfect stage for launching the 33rd World Cup Stop for Waterski and Wakeboard. It was also the first Stop ever to be staged in Australia. At the closing ceremony, Mayor Paddi Creevey confirmed that this is part of a four-year agreement with the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF). The event is supported by the State Government through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions.
As a World Cup location, Mandurah is impressive. Surrounded by magnificent waterfront homes, first class restaurants, blue skies, 30C temperatures, Pelicans, Dolphins and a very experienced local Waterski and Wakeboard team, this event will certainly grow and grow over the coming years. MasterCraft, the official boat suppliers, moored their own VIP Cruiser right at the starting dock area.

12Mar12 Young Talents Take All By Surprise At Most Successful Moomba Masters For Many Years

Tim Bradstreet AUSToday will be a Moomba day to be remembered for many years. Police estimates are that 200k spectators were in the Moomba area and 400k in the wider Festival area. Apart from perfect weather and extraordinary crowds on site, to the surprise of many, it was the youngest athletes who captured both the hearts of the fans and the medals on Melbourne’s Yarra River this time in the Open events. Whitney McClintock CAN (22) dominated Tricks, Slalom and Overall, Nate Smith USA (20) stole the show in Slalom, and Tim Bradstreet (19) took Jump Gold. Iris Cambray FRA (18) took Silver in Tricks with great performances also from Erika Lang USA (16) and Anna Gay USA (11). Against the very best in the world, this is a clear sign that the next generation has already arrived and the old order is about to change.
The other exceptional performances came from Natalia Berdnikova BLR in Jump, Joel Wing AUS in Overall and Aliaksei Zharnasek BLR in Tricks. For all the score details, see :

It was like the old days today ! Those huge crowds have returned and even Night Jump had a packed arena. As usual, the day was full of high points. Tricks Semi-Finals came first and 16 year-old Erika Lang from Arizona, USA, was the star of the show. Having beaten both Clementine Lucine FRA and Natalia Berdnikova BLR today, make sure you catch her performance in the Monday Finals Webcast at 09.45hrs local time. In Men Tricks, World Record Holder Aliaksei Zharnasek BLR recovered fully from his Round 1 disappointment with a leading score of 11,470 today. That Final on Monday is at 10.30hrs local time.

10Mar12 Moomba Saturday Brings Out The Melbourne Crowds And Webcast Trials Prove Successful For The Weekend

Moomba Masters on the Yarra River
Here is the Moomba Webcast Link :
http://www.moombamasters.com.au/index.html
Young talent really did set the scene today ! In perfect weather again , Round 1 of Women and Men Tricks kicked off with 15 Women chasing 8 Semi-Final places and 15 Men chasing 12 places behind the Nautique 200 competition boat. This forced all to treat it like the Finals. With both World Champions and World Record Holders involved, it was a fantastic battle. In Women Tricks, early falls by Danyelle Bennett USA and Alex Lauretano USA ruled them out. The big scores came from 19 year-old Iris Cambray FRA and 16 year old Erika Lang USA. However, World Record Holder Clementine Lucine FRA was not far behind. This will guarantee a great Semi Finals on Sunday. In Men Tricks, World Overall Champion Adam Sedlmajer CZE also went down early and did not move forward. Again, young talent shone through. Joshua Briant AUS aged 16 clocked up the second highest score. Only 22 year-old Herman Beliakou BLR could beat him. The next generations already looks good!

09Mar12 Moomba Friday Brings Many Surprises - And Saturday To Bring Live Webcast

Only Regina Jaquess USA scores on the 10.75m lineWith the best weather seen at Moomba weekend for many years, today was full of drama, surprises and sunshine. Kicking off with Women Slalom Round 1, Karina Nowlan AUS, Clementine Lucine FRA and Danyelle Bennett USA, all missed gates and will not go forward. With 21 Skiers chasing 12 places, nobody got on to the 11.25m line till the 15th Skier entered the Yarra River. This was Karen Stevens CAN. Her 3 buoys on this line pushed her far into the lead. Regina Jaquess USA was last out. On clearing the 12m line, there was a gate camera malfunction. Following a resulting delay, she left the dock cold on the 11.25m line but got an ovation for her score of 1.5 buoys on the 10.75m line - the only one to beat Stevens.

World Champion Natalia Berdnikava BLR dominates Jump
Round 1 of Women and Men Jump was also a thriller. Here Marion Mathieu FRA was the first to break 50m. Only the World Champion, Natalia Berdnikova BLR could beat her. This she did with an enormous distance of 56.2m - clearly in a league of her own right now. In the Men event, 16 year old Ryan Baldwin NZL held the lead for some time with a new Personal Best score of 49.3m. Timothy Bradstreet AUS was the first to break 60m with a lead distance of 66.7m. That was on the lower 1.65m Ramp ! Jimmy Siemers USA caught all by surprise with a very impressive 67.0m to take the lead. Nobody could beat this pair till the last Jumper entered the arena, World Champion and World Record Holder Freddy Krueger. His 67.6m was the jump of the day but just 0.6m ahead of Jimmy. The Semi-Finals will certainly be ones to watch closely.

Jack Rogge, IOC President, along with IOC Vice-President and conference organizer, Anita DeFranz set records at this 5th Edition of Women and Sport Conference. The new IOC Youth Games were highlighted from Singapore and Innsbruck. Her final address to the delegates cited the need for "gender equality" in administration and leadership, as well as, mentorship, education, coaching and increasing the numbers.
President Rogge reported on many topics of interest, but one of the most interesting was that every NOC entering the London Olympics will be entering women. This will be a first!
Alex will be accepting the Chairperson nomination for Women and Sport for the American Waterski Association of USAWS. Others interested in working on this worthy cause should contact Jeffry at jeffryaski@aol.com.

Ray Stokes - AUS - 1960 - 2011
|
Ray's contribution to our sport of Waterskiing has been truly revolutionary. Growing up in a home where his father Noel was already a major contributor to the sport in Australia gave him a perfect start. His love of Jumping combined with his enormous Skydiving and Wingsuit Flying experience gave him a unique insight to what makes Jumpers fly ! Understanding the dynamics of Aircraft lift resulted in him producing the first Stokes Tip on Jump Skis - mimicking the leading edge design of an aircraft's wing. This progressed to his advanced and revolutionary Jump ski designs and specialized compression Jump suits and equipment - and eventually to the establishment of www.stokesskis.com
On the water, many also regard Ray as one of the best Jump and Slalom coaches of all time. His patience and technical skill at all levels is world-renowned. Having coached many National Teams and travelled the globe, he was also the coaching inspiration behind the World Jump Records of Emma Sheers AUS and June Fladborg DEN. Ray was respected wherever he travelled as a very special talent.
If a successful life is measured by how many people were certain that you were their best friend, that medal was fully earned by our dear friend RAY STOKES. With over 29,000 CaringBridge personal messages on his site, Ray had an extraordinary impact on almost everybody he met. Sadly our dear friend Ray lost his brave battle with Cancer two days ago in Hospital in Melbourne. Given just 90 days to live on January 19th 2011, he pushed that out to nine months through sheer determination. His treatments were tough but in all that time, he kept smiling. With the help true friends, he fought the battle. June Fladborg's caring help is beyond words and going through so much with him made such a difference to his final weeks on earth. Ray was special and his pain has now ended. June and Mark Frawley will keep his friends in touch over the coming days. Our hearts go out to Ray's two boys and family and of course to all his very close friends. Rest in peace Ray Stokes.

Blessed by good weather including mostly favorable winds, the 10th edition of the IWWF World Disabled Championships concluded in perfect fashion with a world record by the last jumper. It was as if it were a scripted scenario, made for the movies. Defending world jump champion in the MP3 category (now combined with all MPs into the new seated category) and current world record holder, bested his own record with the longest jump ever by a seated skier of 26.6m before taking a tour around the lake instead of his final jump to a rousing ovation.
The top three teams, as was the case two years ago, were in order USA, Italy and France. The U.S. won its sixth title of a possible 10 and exhibited the most depth. However, even though five scores are counted in each of the three events towards the team overall (a total of 15 event scores), France garnered the third place on the team podium with four athletes.
There were six world records set and approved at the event. Records are kept in each of the individual categories rather than in seated, standing and vision impaired.
MP2 women Jessica Radmilovic, USA, in tricks (780pts) and slalom (4 buoys at 37kph/18.25m on the outer course). She remains the only MP2 woman to have completed a pass on the outer course.
A/L1 men Jamie McDonald, AUS, in jump (17.4m).
MP3 women 2010 Disabled Athlete of the Year Delphine Le Sausse, FRA, in tricks (1340)
V1 men 2010 Disabled Athlete of the Year Daniele Cassioli, ITA, in jump (21.1m)
MP3 men Darryl Hoyle, AUS, in jump (26.3) - reduced from 26.6 upon replotting.
In conclusion, the organization of the event headed up by Larry Downes was brilliant and resulted in a lengthy standing ovation at the final banquet for him and his crew.

created with a free day on Friday. This was a clever insurance policy to cover
risks of bad weather interruptions, etc. As it turned out, it was not a totally

Jaret who is coming off an injury, was first out in seed 1, but posted the score that no one could catch. Tim Bradstreet AUS was third with 65 m, but performed on the 1.65m ramp, and is a credible threat to dethrone the reigning champions. With a little over only 4m separating the entire final field, it could also be anybody's game.
In women's jump, Natalia Berdnikova BLR led the Belarus attack which found both she and her teammate, Iryna Turets in the top two spots in women jump. Like the men, another young Australian phenom, Jacinta Carroll is in the mix, placing third.

Peter Felix - GBR - 1924-2011
|
Peter Felix can be described as ‘A Man for all Seasons’. He was one of the pioneer waterskiers at Ruislip Lido with David Nations. I do not know when he started but believe it would have been around 1953. He competed and represented GB internationally. He was the British Slalom Champion in the four years 1955-58 and Overall Champion 1957 and 1958. On the competitive front after retiring from competition Peter continued to be active on the water and was captain of the British teams at the World Championships in Vichy in 1963 and in Surfers Paradise in 1965.
Peter served on the British Waterski Federation Management Committee for many years and was elected its Chairman 1970 to 1974. As a Management member he had the task of integrating Racing with waterskiing as a whole which he did with great feeling and skill. He was instrumental together with Tony Richardson in bringing the Earl of Snowdon as our Patron.
Peter then with his wife Helena worked tirelessly with Tony Edge for the British Disabled Waterski Association. They both raised money for the Charity by running the London Marathon leading blind runners on a number of occasions. Peter chaired the BDWSA and became its President.
In between all this Peter found time to write and publish a book – An introduction to waterskiing.
Peter’s work has been recognised not just by the BDWSA and British Federation which both elected him Honorary Life Member but also first in 1977 by her Majesty when he was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal for services to sport during the first 25 years of her reign and more recently with the OBE.

25Jan11 Ray Stokes is in our thoughts

Ray and his boys at Moomba 2010Few in our sport have influenced so profoundly so many Waterskiers around the world. Few have been so admired and respected. Australia's Ray Stokes has a very special gift in training and encouraging Skiers of all ability, in product design and development and in coaching at the very highest level. His training of both Emma Sheers AUS and June Fladborg DEN in breaking World Jump Records is where he excelled. Most of all, he has created happiness wherever his career took him.
Very recently, Ray Stokes was diagnosed with terminal Cancer. His remaining time with us is limited. This has shocked our Waterski community. He is now in Melbourne with his friends and family making arrangements for the future of his two boys, his major concern. Most of all he needs our support at this special time.
