Young talent really did set the scene today ! In perfect weather again , Round 1 of Women and Men Tricks kicked off with 15 Women chasing 8 Semi-Final places and 15 Men chasing 12 places behind the Nautique 200 competition boat. This forced all to treat it like the Finals. With both World Champions and World Record Holders involved, it was a fantastic battle. In Women Tricks, early falls by Danyelle Bennett USA and Alex Lauretano USA ruled them out. The big scores came from 19 year-old Iris Cambray FRA and 16 year old Erika Lang USA. However, World Record Holder Clementine Lucine FRA was not far behind. This will guarantee a great Semi Finals on Sunday. In Men Tricks, World Overall Champion Adam Sedlmajer CZE also went down early and did not move forward. Again, young talent shone through. Joshua Briant AUS aged 16 clocked up the second highest score. Only 22 year-old Herman Beliakou BLR could beat him. The next generations already looks good!
09Mar12 Moomba Friday Brings Many Surprises - And Saturday To Bring Live Webcast![]() Only Regina Jaquess USA scores on the 10.75m line With the best weather seen at Moomba weekend for many years, today was full of drama, surprises and sunshine. Kicking off with Women Slalom Round 1, Karina Nowlan AUS, Clementine Lucine FRA and Danyelle Bennett USA, all missed gates and will not go forward. With 21 Skiers chasing 12 places, nobody got on to the 11.25m line till the 15th Skier entered the Yarra River. This was Karen Stevens CAN. Her 3 buoys on this line pushed her far into the lead. Regina Jaquess USA was last out. On clearing the 12m line, there was a gate camera malfunction. Following a resulting delay, she left the dock cold on the 11.25m line but got an ovation for her score of 1.5 buoys on the 10.75m line - the only one to beat Stevens.
![]() World Champion Natalia Berdnikava BLR dominates Jump Round 1 of Women and Men Jump was also a thriller. Here Marion Mathieu FRA was the first to break 50m. In the Men event, 16 year old Ryan Baldwin NZL held the lead for some time with a new Personal Best score of 49.3m. Timothy Bradstreet AUS was the first to break 60m with a lead distance of 66.7m. That was on the lower 1.65m Ramp ! Jimmy Siemers USA caught all by surprise with a very impressive 67.0m to take the lead. Nobody could beat this pair till the last Jumper entered the arena, World Champion and World Record Holder Freddy Krueger. His 67.6m was the jump of the day but just 0.6m ahead of Jimmy. The Semi-Finals will certainly be ones to watch closely. Webcast Being Tested Now - Watch For Link Details Here When Available

The Finals Slalom kept all their promises.
First on the water, 12 Finalists Women. The 4th out, Peruvian Delfina Cuglievan realizes a very beautiful performance with 3 buoys in 11m25 of rope. She improves her personal best and takes the lead of the competition. There are of course several skiers to go but as the scores come in, Delfina realizes that Victory's chances are more and more serious. The French skier Manon Costard earned the Silver medal with 1.5 buoys in 11m25. It is the American Caroline Hensley who completes the Podium.
It is the first time when Peru wins Gold medal and the enjoyment of the whole Cuglievan Clan in Meuzac is pleasing to see.

Straight to the Men and there also we attend a very spicy duel: the American Nate Smith assures the Show by making his complete pass at 10m75. Last on the dock, he knew what he had to make. Swiss skier Benjamin Stadlbaur was 2nd and the 3rd French skier Sacha Descuns completed this very beautiful podium.
This first final knew its prize of suspense and feelings. Many personal best performances were established.
Reported by Rima Cambray

83 skiers from 28 nations are competing in this 5th Edition of the Worlds under 21.
A very beautiful atmosphere reigned during the 2 ceremonies:
An official opening ceremony took place in the Assembly of the Regional Council under the aegis of President DENANOT in the presence of Kuno RITCHARD, President of IWWF and Patrice MARTIN President of the French Federation.
A festive ceremony organized by Saint Yrieix la Perche's city, associated with the Observatory of Sport without Violence gathered the children of the local sports associations as well as the delegations for a parade. Mr BOISSERIE, the Deputy Mayor welcomed everybody in Villasport.
The preliminary events took place without interruption on Thursday, 1st - Friday, 2 Saturday, 3. The skiers realized very beautiful performances, most improved their best personal best performance and the ticket to enter finals is very high.
The setting of the competition is magnificent: all the rising generation of new water ski talent gathered in Espace Nautique, Meuzac ready to fight.
In Slalom: The more than perfect conditions allowed the spectators to admire 5 skiers in the 10m75 and 4 skiers in the 11m25 of rope.
The very impressive Nate Smith, USA, 3rd in World championships Open was at the top of the men's with 4 buoys in 10m75. At the women, it is the French Amber Frank who takes the head of the preliminary with 2 Buoys in 11m25.
The scores are tight and we expect a very beautiful final.
In Tricks : Alexandre Poteau from France took the lead at the preliminaries with a great score of 11470 points . For the ladies, it is the American Erica Lang who clocks in at the top with a score of 8580 points. There are 4 scores in more than 9000 points for the men and 3 scores in more than 8000 points at the ladies. It is the majestic plateau which waits for the spectators in finale.
The Jump kept all it promises with an incredible jump of 54,4 m for the Australian Jacinta Caroll. It is the ladies course record and the young woman is within 40 cms of her best performance. Thimothy Bradstreet took the lead fro the men with a huge jump of 63,5 m.
The finals will starts today at 13H30 with the slalom women and Men.
Trick final will take place Sunday 10:00 followed at 13:00 by Jump.
Reported by Rima Cambray
Blessed by good weather including mostly favorable winds, the 10th edition of the IWWF World Disabled Championships concluded in perfect fashion with a world record by the last jumper. It was as if it were a scripted scenario, made for the movies. Defending world jump champion in the MP3 category (now combined with all MPs into the new seated category) and current world record holder, bested his own record with the longest jump ever by a seated skier of 26.6m before taking a tour around the lake instead of his final jump to a rousing ovation.
The top three teams, as was the case two years ago, were in order USA, Italy and France. The U.S. won its sixth title of a possible 10 and exhibited the most depth. However, even though five scores are counted in each of the three events towards the team overall (a total of 15 event scores), France garnered the third place on the team podium with four athletes.
There were six world records set and approved at the event. Records are kept in each of the individual categories rather than in seated, standing and vision impaired.
MP2 women Jessica Radmilovic, USA, in tricks (780pts) and slalom (4 buoys at 37kph/18.25m on the outer course). She remains the only MP2 woman to have completed a pass on the outer course.
A/L1 men Jamie McDonald, AUS, in jump (17.4m).
MP3 women 2010 Disabled Athlete of the Year Delphine Le Sausse, FRA, in tricks (1340)
V1 men 2010 Disabled Athlete of the Year Daniele Cassioli, ITA, in jump (21.1m)
MP3 men Darryl Hoyle, AUS, in jump (26.3) - reduced from 26.6 upon replotting.
In conclusion, the organization of the event headed up by Larry Downes was brilliant and resulted in a lengthy standing ovation at the final banquet for him and his crew.

The World Disabled Waterski Championships are in progress.

Jim Grew reports there are 38 skiers from 13 countries and during the first three of four days four world records have been set or tied, two in tricks, two in jump and they are actually approved. This is also the first worlds where we have divided our athletes among three categories instead of the usual seven to nine, hence seated, standing and vision impaired.

The Waterski World Championships schedule here in Dubna, Russia, was
created with a free day on Friday. This was a clever insurance policy to cover
risks of bad weather interruptions, etc. As it turned out, it was not a totally
free day as four extra hours were needed to complete the last three Series of
Men’s Tricks Eliminations this morning. This produced several surprises and
some stunning performances.

The top six skiers in the Men Trick preliminaries were either from France or Belarus, 3 for each team. In the battle for trick supremacy, Belarus and Zharnasek came out on top for the moment but France placed four skiers in the finals to two for Belarus. Nicolas Le Forestier, returning from injury, skied in to 2nd place to the delight of his countrymen.

In what promises to be a classic match up, Freddy Krueger USA who jumped 65.2m and Jaret Llewellyn CAN who edged him out for the top spot with 65.4 m will face off once again in Dubna to see who reigns supreme. The two jumpers have faced the exact same situation many times at the same venue during World Cup Competitions held here between 2005 and 2009. Jaret who is coming off an injury, was first out in seed 1, but posted the score that no one could catch. Tim Bradstreet AUS was third with 65 m, but performed on the 1.65m ramp, and is a credible threat to dethrone the reigning champions. With a little over only 4m separating the entire final field, it could also be anybody's game.
In women's jump, Natalia Berdnikova BLR led the Belarus attack which found both she and her teammate, Iryna Turets in the top two spots in women jump. Like the men, another young Australian phenom, Jacinta Carroll is in the mix, placing third.

The IWWF held its biennial congress at the new high-tech Dubna Conference Center.
Delegates from 37 countries had their opportunity to participate in the IWWF decision making and choice of direction.
The Congress decided that a major effort should be undertaken to pursue the new opportunity of having Cable Wakeboard in the 2020 Olympics. A committee was named and will begin work immediately.
The Congress accepted the bid of Chile to hold the 2013 World Water Ski Championships in November 2013. The congress also accepted the bid by the Italian Water Ski Federation to host the 2013 World Disabled Championships and the 2015 World Water Ski Championships at Idroscalo in Milan.

With a successful and smooth organization of the second stop of the China-USA-Australia Show Ski Challenge the City of Linyi confirmed that they are ready to host the World Cup in September. The venue along the Yihe river offered good skiing conditions during the training and competition days. Over 10’000 spectators crowed the riverbank and cheered the acrobatic performances of the three Show Teams.

“It is one of the most exciting and best organised Waterski events which I’ve attended during my 50 years involvement in our sport”, said IWWF President Kuno Ritschard to the press.
Flags, huge banners and big red lampions on the main roads of the City promoted the Show Ski Challenge, grandstands with seating for 30’000 persons on both sides of the Waterski Arena, direct TV and over 100’000 spectators for the official Opening Ceremony and the Finals are only some of the highlights to mention.

The IWWF Development Commission continued its work to further the sport worldwide with its latest seminar in Beirut, hosted by the Lebanese Water Ski & Wakeboard Federation. The seminar also furthered the work of the Development Commission in the Europe and Africa Confederation where the strategy has been to support the inclusion of the sport in the Mediterranean Games. This strategy has been based on the organisation of seminars in Mediterranean countries and backed up with training programmes and events for skiers from this region so that they can then build up to compete at the quadrennial Mediterranean Games.

Our Skiers enjoyed both Summer and Winter here in Melbourne today. For our early morning Trick and Slalom Skiers, it was hot sunshine and suntan lotion all the way. For our Jumpers, it was umbrellas and goggles ! None of this took away from the great competition and none prevented the enormous crowds from enjoying every moment of this very well organized Moomba Masters.

Few in our sport have influenced so profoundly so many Waterskiers around the world. Few have been so admired and respected. Australia's Ray Stokes has a very special gift in training and encouraging Skiers of all ability, in product design and development and in coaching at the very highest level. His training of both Emma Sheers AUS and June Fladborg DEN in breaking World Jump Records is where he excelled. Most of all, he has created happiness wherever his career took him.
Very recently, Ray Stokes was diagnosed with terminal Cancer. His remaining time with us is limited. This has shocked our Waterski community. He is now in Melbourne with his friends and family making arrangements for the future of his two boys, his major concern. Most of all he needs our support at this special time. Ray's many friends are asked to go to this special Website to do what they can to show their appreciation for this special person when he needs us most www.stokesskis.com
A www.CaringBridge.org page has also been opened for those who would like to send messages to Ray. Please enter his name as one word on the entry page - raystokes - to make the contact.
