Prologue.

This trick manual was produced by Mr. Joe Stark in 1990 primarily for use in South Africa. With his permission, the IWSF Tournament Council has made minor amendments so that it has general application.

The manual is not intended to teach skiers how to perform tricks, nor does anything in it take precedence over the published rules.

It is intended to give guidance on the interpretation of the rules.

The Tournament Council thanks Mr. Stark for his very thorough work and hopes it will help all judges when making judgement decisions.

Important Note:
These descriptions are current and meet with the IWSF 1991 Rules (Brown Cover) and also current with the 1992 Rules Addendum. Please check carefully with future rules editions to verify that the descriptions herein are still appropriate.

IWSF Training Manual for Trick Calling

A Tricks panel consists of five appointed Judges. The particular qualifications of the Judges depends on the Homologation specification for the Tournament.

Other officials include:-
                 A 20-second timer and a backup 20-second timer, whose function is explained in rule 15.12;
                 A boat judge whose function is explained in rule 15.11;
A Calculator whose function is to produce a scored "master sheet" after checking against the skierŐs declared run and the judgesŐ sheets.

Your duty as a Trick Panel Judge is to fairly view all the tricks of the competitors and to decide on each trick as to whether the trick is correctly performed or not. Every trick is clearly defined in this manual and must be correct in all detail.
A trick is either absolutely correct or it is to be disallowed.
We do not credit "almost" tricks!!

As the skier approaches the course, you must note that the boat-path is correct and the same for all skiers. Refer rule 15.08 and 15.04.
Watch-out for skiers who may "practise" prior to entering the course. Refer also rule 15.02.
If a skier does a positional trick prior to entering the course, this trick must be written down on your judging sheet and notated as a positional trick.
When the skier begins his trick run, you need to decide whether the skier was in the trick course or not - read rule 15.05 and 15.06 very carefully.
Write down each trick as you see it. Do not attempt to second-guess the skier.
If the skier falls, you must decide whether the fall was the result of the trick preceding the fall, or whether the fall was as a result of a current trick attempt.

Should the skier still be performing when you hear the 20- second horn, do not stop judging, Write all tricks after the horn as not all Judges will agree as to what the last trick completed was. Also, the skier might fall immediately after the horn and you need to decide whether the fall was as a result of the trick or not or a deliberate fall as detailed in Rule 15.02.

While the skier is performing, you must also be aware of any conditions which could occur that could affect the skier's run and you must be able to decide on whether any "unfair" conditions existed or not.
Also be aware of the fact that skiers can request a reride for all sorts of reasons, valid or imagined, so total awareness of what is happening is of great importance.

Finally, it is YOUR reading of the tricks that counts. Do not be influenced or intimidated by others on the panel.
Be prepared always to listen and to learn from more experienced Judges. Read the descriptions of the tricks in this manual.

Be ready to not only judge the performance of the skiers,
         - but to judge the performance of yourself.

 General Notes:-

* Skiing position is always as defined in the rule book.
* All tricks are started and ended with the ski either forwards or backwards.
* All tricks are started and ended with a hesitation (see rule 15.19 a)
* A trick not ended with a hesitation must be disallowed and must automatically disqualify the following trick.
* Except in the case of the hesitation in the 90 degree position in side-slides, change of direction of the ski from clockwise to anti-clockwise or vice-versa will be accepted as sufficient hesitation.
* Reverse tricks are always performed as per the basic turn.
* The trick is always disallowed if the skier falls as a result of the trick - even after the 20 second horn.
* All toehold tricks must be performed without the skier deliberately handling any part of the rope or handle during the execution of the trick.
* A toehold trick must be disallowed if, once the skier has entered the course, the foot in the toestrap intentionally touches the ski during setup or execution of the trick.
* Some tricks can only be done on one ski. Where a trick can be performed on two skis, the principle and definition are the same as for one-ski tricks.
* A wake turn is a trick performed while the ski is in mid- air while crossing the crest of the wake.
* A wake turn not done in mid-air while crossing the crest of the wake scores zero, it is not scored as a water turn.
* "Forwards skiing position" denotes that the ski is travelling in a direction such that the front edge of the ski is leading the direction of travel.
* "Backwards skiing position" denotes that the ski is travelling in a direction such that the back edge of the ski is leading the direction of travel.
* "Stationary" means that there is no angular rotation of the ski.
