The IWSF Tournament Council has voted to institute an Elite Skier Ranking System based on placement on a trial basis. This new program was approved after a trial study using the 2001 results. The ranking methodolgy is based on the system used by the Professional Slalom Skiers Association(PASS) and developed by Mark Crone. This system was used for the 2000 World Cup Ranking in slalom. The basic system was modified to make it more appropriate for world wide use. IWSF Elite Ranking Concepts 3/19/02 Use placement based system already developed (PASS) and used in the IWSF World Cup for slalom to rank elite skiers in Men and Women's Slalom, Tricks, and Jump Key Concepts 1 Tournament points Each tournament will be assigned a certain number of points. The points will be based on three concepts as follows: a) 10 points for each $1000 USD of prize money on a per event basis b) Title points assigned per IWSF TC decision (others may be added) EAME Championships 100 points AA Championships 100 points Pan Am Championships 100 points World Championships 200 points c) Athlete points The system of athlete points shall be determined as follows: When the traditional ranking list is published, the top 15 athletes in each discipline shall be asigned point values based on their placing. The PASSPoints spreadsheet shows the percentage of points awarded for each place based on the size of the entry. 3. Skier Point totals Each skier will accumulate points based on a rotating year long schedule. Points shall be calculated by adding up points from the skiers tournaments in the last calendar year. Only a certain number of tournaments will be be qualified by the IWSF TC for the rankings. The total will be based on the skiers top scores in the top X tournaments where X is 50% of the total number of qualified tournaments. For example, if there are 20 qualified tournaments, the top 10 scores would be used. 4. 2002 Starting basis The 2002 Rankings shall start based on a 2001 Ranking using preselected tournaments. 5. Tournament Selection Tournaments shall be selected by the IWSF TC based on several factors as follows: a) Automatic selection of the title tournaments per item 1 b) Automatic selection of cash prize tournaments c) Selection of other tournaments nominated by TC members that must have a minimum number of athlete points as determined by the IWSF TC. The goal is for 100 points, but fewer may be accepted to meet the second goal of a minimum of 10 tournaments world wide.
